TU Bergakademie Freiberg signed agreements on May 18 and 19 to intensify its international cooperation with China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) in Xuzhou and Shanghai University of Science and Technology (USST).

With 235 students currently enrolled, Chinese scholars constitute the largest number of foreign students at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. “We want to strengthen our cooperation with selected universities in China, to ensure that qualified Chinese students and young scientists from prominent institutions continue to come to Freiberg,” explained Rector Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht. Such universities included China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) in Xuzhou and Shanghai University of Science and Technology (USST), he said.

CUMT is recognized as one of China’s elite universities, and TU Bergakademie Freiberg already cooperates closely with it. In the so-called ‘4+2 Program’, Chinese bachelor graduates are sent to Freiberg for entire Masters courses. Students from Freiberg can, in return, travel to China for training at a summer school. In 2015, Rector Prof. Geng und Vice-Rector Prof. Zhou travelled to Freiberg to take part in the official celebrations surrounding the Bergakademie’s 250th anniversary. The agreement signed on May 18 served to further consolidate the two institutions’ already well-established cooperative relations.

USST offers similar courses of study to TU Bergakademie Freiberg, including in mechanical engineering, business studies, management, materials science, the natural sciences, geological engineering, chemistry, and environmental engineering, making the elite university in Shanghai an interesting partner for cooperation. With its excellent funding profile and strong connections to German culture and tradition (with German roots going right back to its foundation), USST already counts RWTH Aachen University and Hamburg’s University of Applied Sciences as German partner universities. With the memorandum of understanding signed on May 19, USST and TU Bergakademie Freiberg have signaled their intent to further their cooperation in education and research. During his visit, Rector Barbknecht was accompanied by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Prof. Tian Weifeng, as they visited the German Cultural Center at USST.

From May 12 to 15, Ms. Ingrid Lange and Ms. Haina Chen-Konietzky from the International Centre at TU Bergakademie Freiberg visited the two mining universities Liaoning Technical University (LTU) and Xi’an University of Science and Technology (XUST). The Bergakademie already has connections with the two universities in the areas of mining and rock mechanics. Indeed, Prof. Carsten Drebenstedt is currently hosting a visiting scientist and a PhD student at the Institute of Mining Engineering and Special Civil Engineering, and it is expected that further avenues for educational exchange with these universities will be discussed during their stay in Freiberg.
